Advertising
by Ron Farleigh
Advertising comes in many different forms, we mentioned in the getting started page about advertising your e-mail on business cards, stationary , and on office, works, or school notice boards. These along with cable T.V. classifieds can bring in a certain amount of business. Before we go any further, you could gain a lot of valuable information on advertising methods from your local library, The type of books I would recomend are those associated with mail order businesses, most of these books give you information on what sort of advertising pays, and how to write good advertising. Your advert is the first thing the general public see, you have only got a few words in which to capture there attention, otherwise they will simply go on to the next advert. When you first try to place an advert, the newspaper will try sell you more space, or commit you to a long term advert at a reduced cost. Initially go for one off adverts, and change them every week, always keep a record of the number of responses, from different adverts, this will tell you which adverts and which papers are best for you.
The bigger the advert, doesn't necessarily mean the bigger the response, sometimes it is better to put an advert in classified, ordinary linage, with a box, or with white space round it, or go for a semi display,, or full display advert.
Where should you advertise, in a publication with little advertising, or in one with similar adverts to the one you intend to put in. Should you advertise in a free paper, one the public are given free, or in a normal paid newspaper, should you use leaflets, delivered direct to homes, or insert leaflets in local papers.
The answer to these questions differ from area to area and country to country, look at the various options open to you, study the adverts, pick out the ones you think are successful, cost is only relevant to the return on your investment, a cheap advert in a news paper with a small circulation, can be good, but it is very expensive if you don't get any response from it.
What I have always found is that your advert must match the readership of the paper or magazine you are advertising in, look for the papers, or magazines with similar adverts to the one you intend using, for instance, if you are advertising to directly recruit your first level, use a periodical that carries adverts for home businesses, jobs working from home, part time jobs, or ones selling businesses. Buy the periodicals you think are best, check the circulation figures against the cost of advertising, the select the adverts you think are good. Analyze them, these are your competition, ask yourself why you think they are good, and how can you make your advert more appealing to the general public. Normal classified adverts are usually put in alphabetical order, with the first word in bold type, you can pay for the first, or all the lines to go in bold to make them stand out. All these gimmicks work to a certain extent, but try and come up with something different. Try something like this for a change:- MADMAN is giving away secrets to making a fortune FREE. E-mail madman@xxxxxx. or, RICHBITCH tells all E-mail richbitch@xxxxxxxxxxxx. When you start to consider your advertising strategy, don't forget about college, and student publications, the readership of these periodicals are internet savvy, short of money, and have a lot of contacts, plus the periodicals are usually around for a long time , and are read by many people.
Paid advertising doesn't have to be done through newspapers and periodicals, Try placing adverts on bags used by local stores, pick the stores whose customers are likely to have computers, local radio can be profitable, try sending articles to local newspapers, or radio stations, but be subtle how you include references to you, if it is blatant advertising, they won't use your article.
